The Clean Cooking Solution

Find out what makes us great for customers and the planet

About us

BioMassters Ltd. is a pellet cooking company established in Rwanda in April 2020, setting out to prove that customer-centricity and enormous positive impact can go hand-in-hand with financial profitability. We produce “Made in Rwanda” pellet fuel out of biomass waste materials and supply Tier-4 gasification pellet stoves to our customers. In the process of establishing a low-carbon cooking solution with a renewable fuel supply chain, BioMassters creates green jobs, contributes to a circular economy, sharply reduces emissions, reduces the cost of cooking for households and changes lives. We believe that by combining our pellet fuel and stove we have created the least-cost, best-fit solution for the masses in urban Rwanda and beyond; a truly clean, affordable, and sustainable energy cooking solution.

Mission

We aim to replace charcoal production and charcoal cooking by providing modern, affordable and low-carbon pellet fuel production and cooking solutions, based on locally produced fuel from waste materials.

Vision

We strive to develop a low-carbon pellet cooking value chain by pioneering and scaling the most customer-centric, climate friendly and financially sustainable cooking company in Africa.

Problem

2.8 billion people globally do not have access to modern energy cooking services, including the majority of Rwandan households. This is deeply problematic, since traditional cooking is energy inefficient, highly polluting and thus harmful to people and the planet alike. In Rwanda, traditional cooking is estimated to be responsible for 40% of the country’s air pollution. Globally, cooking with traditional non-renewable fuel wood is responsible for 1.9-2.3% of all CO2 emissions. Burning residual solid fuels for cooking is also responsible for 58% of global black carbon emissions, a potent short-lived greenhouse gas. Moreover, the fumes from traditional cooking are known to cause a health tragedy. It is responsible for 3.8 million premature deaths per year globally, of which more than 7,000 in Rwanda. According to a World Bank report published in 2016 "exposure to air pollution is now the fourth leading fatal health risk worldwide behind metabolic risks, dietary risks, and tobacco smoke. More than six times as many people die from air pollution each year as from malaria, and more than four times as many die from air pollution as from HIV/AIDS”. Altogether, the global cost of inaction is estimated to be 2.4 trillion dollars per year. While traditional fuels, like charcoal, are expensive and dirty, very few alternatives are available to date.

Solution

BioMassters aims to make charcoal production and consumption redundant in Rwanda. We do this by supplying pellets as cooking fuel and by creating the demand for these pellets through the distribution of the most advanced biomass gasification stoves on the global market. Pellets are a homogenous fuel with little variability in size, shape and moisture content that is inexpensive to produce and transport. In combination with Tier-4 gasification stoves, pellets provide a flame nearly as clean and convenient as LPG for a price significantly below charcoal. In addition to the benefits for the customer, there are huge benefits to the public as well. Pellet burning is climate- and environmentally friendly, relieving the pressure on Rwandan forests from charcoal production by reducing biomass use by up to 90%. Moreover, BioMassters uses mostly biomass waste that is left over from furniture production and forest management as we prove circular economy can be a reality in Rwanda.

Healthy: No harmful smoke with our efficient cookstoves
Fast and convenient: Start cooking in just 1-2 minutes.
Affordable: Customers save as much as 30% compared to dirty charcoal.
Climate- and environmentally friendly: Reduces biomass use up to 90% and slashes emissions
